What's a 'Selection Massale'? Glad you asked. It's a French term for when a vintner takes cuttings from their own estate vineyard and re-propgates them, as opposed to going 'shopping' for some different clones of the same grape variety. The hope is to achieve a true vineyard imprint on the finished wine instead of the more 'en vogue' clonal imprint. We love the 2011 wines from Holdredge as they really emphasize the pretty, fragrant, spicy, elegant charcters of the Russian River Valley, which are getting a bit lost in that 'clonal' shuffle! Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, cola, some foresty stuff. And 91 points from the stingy Steve Tanzer!
